Shri Sharabha, thus, is a Vigraha (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu and His divine form. The legend of the lion slaying Sharabha as portrayed in the Sharabha-Kavacham or the Sharabha Vadham is a legend of the warrior goddess Lakshmi. There are two versions of the legend, one being in the Garuda Purana and the other in the Varaha Purana. The legend is found in the Varaha Purana as depicted in the following quote: There was a time when Lord Varaha was threatened by Mahishasura, the demon king of the Vrishni dynasty. As Varaha was trying to escape from Mahishasura, the latter tried to seize his sacred vehicle (Varaha) by dragging it down. As he was pulling Varaha, Lakshmi was struggling to save her vehicle from being dragged down by the demon king. So she leapt down from the vehicle, broke the lion's neck and rescued her vehicle, which then turned into Varaha. The demon king attacked Varaha with his bow and arrow, but he was defeated and freed. As a result of his victory, Varaha was declared as a god. Lakshmi in return made Varaha's victory her own, and the legend of Varaha Sharabha is born. She became one of the main deities in the Prasanga Padya, a variant of the Pañcaratra tradition. The legend of Sharabha slaying the demon king of Vrishni dynasty, Mahishasura, is found in the Garuda Purana as well: It is said that Mahisha's first attack on Varaha was a failure, and he failed again after the second attack. At that time, the goddess Lakshmi who was protecting Varaha, came to Varaha's rescue. She killed Mahisha with her body. The body then turned into a gigantic lion. This lion killed Mahisha. Varaha was then declared as a god. This lion came to be known as Sharabha. It is said that this lion or Varaha is the brother of Garuda, and that the demon king of Vrishni dynasty was the brother of Garuda.
It is also said that Sharabha can be found in Lord Vishnu's Garuda Purana incarnation as well as Lord Vishnu's Sarvabhudevaka.
